Cruise disembarking at Shanghai

We are taking a 24 day cruise in May 2020- we embark in Hong Kong, visit Vietnam, Thailand , Phillipines, Taiwan, Brunei and Japan, and disembark at Shanghai. We are staying in Shanghai for 2 nights and then we fly back to Australia. Do we need a chinese visa? If not, what formalities are required?

If you are Australian citizens, you don't need a visa for your stay in Shanghai because everything indicates that you are eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. Anyway, I will encourage you to recheck your itinerary to see if the following conditions are fulfilled:

- Your cruise should not have its last port call, immediately before Shanghai, in mainland China.
- Your flight from Shanghai to Australia should not have any additional landing(s) within mainland China and the country where your cruise will have its last port call, immediately before Shanghai. In other words, if your last port call, immediately before Shanghai, is in Japan, your flight is not allowed to have a stop there.

If the above mentioned conditions are fulfilled, you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area. You will need your valid Australian passports, your flight ticket in hard copy and preferably your accommodation booking.
