About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Cruise disembarking in Shanghai

Hi there

Having spent hours trying to work out whether I am eligible for either the 24hr or 144hr TWOV, I'm now fairly convinced I qualify for neither, but am seeking clarification:

* Cruise embarkation is in Singapore, following a flight from: London -> Beijing (2hr stopover) -> Singapore.
* Penultimate port of call on the cruise prior to Shanghai is Busan in South Korea.
* Scheduled cruise arrival in Shanghai is 0400, although likely to disembark between 0800 and 1000.
* One night hotel stay in Shanghai.
* Outbound flight is the following day at 1155: Shanghai -> Beijing (2hr stopover) -> London.

It is my understanding that the 'scheduled' arrival time of 0400 into Shanghai means I cannot make use of the 24hr TWOV, even if I tried to be the last passenger off the ship at around noon!?

It is also my understanding that the 2hr stopover in Beijing on the way home means I cannot make use of the 144hr TWOV, as this is not a direct flight out of the country?

Is anybody able to confirm this please?

Lastly, if I was to try and find an alternative flight home, either direct, or Shanghai -> Stopover-anywhere-but-China -> London, then I WOULD suddenly become eligible for the 144hr TWOV?

Okay, at least my understanding of the 24hr and 144hr TWOV rules is correct.

I'll try to find a different flight out of Shanghai, either direct back to London, or a stopover elsewhere outside of China.

Thank you for the quick response and confirmation of my understanding.

Everything was perfect until the last portion and that is your itinerary Shanghai - London via Beijing for a period that is longer than 24 hours. For this segment, in case that it remains as you have presented it, you would need to obtain a Chinese visa in advance.

One more detail here... 24 TWOV is calculated from your scheduled arrival in Shanghai until your scheduled departure from Beijing! So, you cannot be eligible for this option, even in theory. Unfortunately.

Anyway, in case that you find an alternative flight option that will bring you out of mainland China directly and without any kind of additional landing within mainland China, you would be really eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. Please, be informed that among eligible airports is also Hong Kong. Maybe this detail could help you in planning an alternative flight home.
