About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

fly to Shanghai PVG and leave on a cruise port from Shanghai (same question)

Arriving Shanghai on Feb. 28, 2020, staying at a friend's home in Shanghai for one night, boarding a cruise ship in Shanghai cruise port, cruise ship leaves Shanghai March 1 2020,at 18:00, do we (party of two) qualify for the 72-Hour Visa-Free Transit in China? We carry Canadian passport.

Yes, get your answer and we are flying from Canada to Shanghai.
But we do not understand the second part of the sentence:
"Your flight to Shanghai should not have any additional landing in mainland China and the country where your cruise will have its first port call."
Yes our flight to Shanghai does not have any additional landing in mainland China,
but want do you mean by "and the country where your cruise will have its first port call" condition.
Would very much appreciated if you clarify. Thanks.

It means that your flight to Shanghai should not have any stop in the country where your cruise first arrives after leaving Shanghai. If it does, then your route will be country A - Shanghai - Country C, so that you won't be eligible for the 144h visa-free transit.
