About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

Ticket from Aus via Hong Kong

If I have a flight from Australia that goes via Hong Kong to Shanghai or Nanjing, then stop in Hong Kong for 2 days on the way back I’m thinking this will not come under the 144hour visa as the flight from Aus (A) doesn’t go direct to mainland China ?

It does not qualify since you are entering and exiting mainland China through the same "country" you need to continue to a third country before you can transit through Hong Kong again.
