About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Traveling from San Francisco to Shanghai and the Beijing and then to bali

We are traveling from San Francisco to Shanghai (22hr layover) then onto Beijing ( another 22 hour layover) and then on to Bali.
Can we utilize the 24 or 72 hour transit free visa? Or do we need a visa?

Unfortunately, when traveling through two different transit zones within mainland China, as you plan to do in Shanghai and Beijing, you are allowed just for 24 hour visa free transit. In your case, you have exceeded the allowed time frame, so you will have to obtain a Chinese tourist (L) visa in advance. The comfort for US citizens is in the fact that they receive 10 year valid, multiple entry visa.
