Rajiv, are you looking for a 24 hour visa free transit or for a Chinese transit (G) visa?
If you are looking for a 24 hour visa free transit (without visa), your itinerary has to be:
Country A - Guangzhou (China, country B) - Country C
For example, a country A can be India, then Guangzhou and after that you can proceed to some other country different than both mainland China and India. It can be Hong Kong, of course. You can also reach Hong Kong by direct train from Guangzhou East railway station to Hung Hom railway station in Hong Kong, but it is necessary to have that ticket bought in advance, online, even before your departure from a country A. The time you are allowed to spend in Guangdong province is 24 hours. It is counted from your scheduled arrival until your scheduled departure.
In case that you are looking after a Chinese transit (G) visa, then you will have to obtain in advance, even before the beginning of your trip to mainland China.
