Callan, if you have overstayed your visa in mainland China, you should report your situation to the local police station as soon as possible, pay the fine, and then apply for an exit permit to leave the country.

A one-day overstay can be solved at the airport where you may be given a fine in addition to a warning (and blacklisting for visa-free transit), but it is extremely uncommon for the police to force you to apply for an exit visa.

UPDATE: Entrance and Exit authorities are closed on weekends. So a one day penalty can easily become a 3 day one. Best bet is to return to the port you from and plead to pay the fine an leave as soon as possible. This is a lengthy (6+ hours) and expensive(¥700 per day )process. So if you find yourself in this situation bring lots of cash and allow a lot of time before a connection.
