Dear, if your total stay in Beijing is less than 24 hours, you can enjoy 24h visa exemption transit; otherwise, you need to apply for visa in advance.

Unfortunately, the answer provided by Justin is not correct. You are not allowed to take a train from Mongolia to Beijing under any visa free transit scheme. Simply speaking, in case that you intend to take this train, you will need a Chinese visa obtained in advance. Of course, if you choose a plane, then you can enjoy 24 or 144 hour visa free transit in Beijing in relation to the length of your stay in the Chinese capital.
