About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

China Transit 144 hours - Type of air ticket

Hi, I plan to fly directly from New York to Shanghai on United Airlines, then with a separate Cathay Dragon ticket from Shanghai to Hong Kong, finally United Airlines from Hong Kong back to New York.

Will I be able to utilize the 144 hours visa free transit?

Yes, the itinerary is fine as long as your nationality qualifies.

Thanks Sebastian. I am American, I thought I read somewhere the entire trip has to be issued under one itinerary.

That is not a requirement for immigration but some airlines are known to refuse travel if your tickets are not on the same itinerary. Emirates is the worst offender among them. Qantas used to do it too until it got shamed by media.
