Exactly. Assuming that you are UK citizen, you will apply for your first Shenzhen VOA at the border crossing, preferably at Lo Wu / Luohu. This VOA allows you to stay in the city for 5 days, starting from the midnight of the following day. When you exit Shenzhen in direction to Hong Kong, this VOA is expired regardless of the time you have spend in Shenzhen. Crossing the border is the termination of your VOA. Anyway, you are perfectly allowed to go literally the day after you have exited from Shenzhen, back to the border where you will apply for your new VOA. Keep in mind that you can expect a couple of questions from the immigration, so have logical reason why do you travel twice in the city within a very short time frame. This is a formality, but just for a case.
