Travel from Korea

Can I fly from Seoul, Korea to Bejing for two days to Shanghai, China and return to Seoul from Shanghai? I hold a US passport.

No, the itinerary of the type you have presented definitely requires a Chinese tourist (L) visa. Simply speaking, you are not allowed to travel to two Chinese transit zones in a row for a period longer than 24 hours.
