About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Travel to Hong Kong and then back to China

I am in Guangzhou with a single entry visa and want to travel to Hong Kong at the end of my trip, then back to Guangzhou to take my flight to my home country of Canada. Is this allowed with the 72 hour transit visa. Not everything is on one booking. Also can I take a bus or train on my way back from Hong Kong or must it be a flight?
Should I contact the airline for further clarification or the Visa office?

Deb, as your route is Canada - Guangzhou -HK -Guangzhou - Canada, you can enjoy the 144hrs visa-free transit in Guangzhou. However, on your way back from HK to Guangzhou, you must take a flight.

For the last part of your question, it will be a complete waste of everyone's time to contact the airline or the consulate/visa office. The consulate will deal with visas (and note that this is NOT a visa) , and the airline will simply tell you that it's your responsibility to have the correct documents.
