About:China Visa Entries / Validity / Duration of Stay

Going to China then on Cruise. Flying into Xian, 2 night's then train to Bejing 3 night's before boarding ship. All tours , hotel etc are through Wendy Woo. Have just been sent all details from operator that they say I must have to apply for visa. When can I apply for visa, will be arriving in China 2 October? Also how difficult is it to apply? Been offered assistance to have my application checked before I submit but they want £300.
