About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a Chinese Visa if I fly into Bejing and leave on a cruise the next day?

I am a US citizen flying to Bejing and leaving on a cruise throughout Asia the next day and will fly home from Singapore. We do have a stop in Hong Kong on the 5th day

You don't need a visa because you will be covered be 24 or 144 hour visa free transit. Of course, your flight to Beijing should not stop in the country where you will have your first port call immediately after Beijing (Tianjin). In other words, if your first port call, immediately after Beijing (Tianjin) is in South Korea, your flight cannot have a stop there because it would be an itinerary: South Korea - Beijing - South Korea and that is not allowed under the visa free rule. I assume that your flight from US to Beijing will be a nonstop one.

As I have mentioned, you will be covered by 24 or 144 hour visa free transit depending on the time you will spend in Beijing from your scheduled flight arrival in Beijing and your scheduled cruise departure from Beijing (Tianjin). If the entire transit time is shorter than 24 hours, then you will use 24 hour visa free transit and if that time is longer just for 1 minute than 24 hours, you will enjoy 144 hour visa free transit.

The fact that one of your port calls will be in Hong Kong is not an issue because Hong Kong has separate (autonomous) immigration rules and procedures from mainland China.
