Indian on cruise ship visiting Shanghai. Visa needed?

Hello , my friend is from India and will be on a cruise going through Shanghai. We want to know if he needs a visa to get off there for the day or even to just be on the ship.

Thank you for any insight.

Jennifer, please provide his detailed itinerary so that I can figure out if he can enjoy visa exemption transit in Shanghai.

Okay, Thank you.
He would be embarking the ship mid-cruise in Nagasaki,Japan Then cruising to Shanghai, Yokohama, Shimizu, Osaka and Kochi,Japan, Shanghai, Busan South Korea, Hong Kong, Nha Trang and Phu My, Vietnam, then disembarking in Singapore where he would fly out of to India.
Shanghai is the Embarkation port but he does not embark or disembark there. He will cruise in for the day . The ship is on port for about 10 hours each time. He may not even get off the ship to go into the port but I’m wondering if it’s required to have the visa anyway. Many thanks.
