Liz, you will find at the bottom of this site this link: More Questions & Answers. Click on it and you will see very large thread in the new page titled: Transit in Urumqi and Guangzhou. There you will see all our doubts and thoughts regarding this particular route. Hopefully, we will know very soon whether do the passengers need a visa or not for that route. At the time being I can just tell you that this route is still the story that has not a conclusive end. In case that you plan to travel very soon, before we receive a first hand testimony from a man that has promised to test the route without issuing a visa, I would suggest you to obtain a transit (G) visa if for nothing, then for a peace of mind.
By the way, your transit time in Urumqi is fine because you continue by the same plane and under the same flight number, but honestly speaking a transit time in Guangzhou seems a bit too short, especially if your flight are on separate tickets. In reality, I'm honestly afraid that you will not be able to make this transfer if the flights are on separate tickets. Be very careful with this detail of your entire itinerary.
