About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Is there a way to get the 24 hour TWOV before I arrive in Shanghai?

I can't seem to find any way to apply for a 24 hour TWOV online. Does that mean I just have to have all my documents in order when I land in Shanghai?

Thanks for this, very helpful! Not sure if this makes a difference, but this trip to Shanghai will be during a 14 hour layover on my way to Indonesia. I am presuming that a long layover with evidence of my next flight to Indonesia is sufficient. Hopefully it doesn't have to be an entirely new ticket/flight and not just evidence of a long layover on one ticket.

Exactly. There is no application for 24 hour TWOV. Essential detail is your itinerary that needs three countries where the China is in the middle and where a transit does not exceed 24 hours. To conclude, for you to be eligible for this type of TWOV, you itinerary has to look something like this:

US - Beijing - the country of your final destination

Also, you can use two stops in China if this means cheaper flight option, again with the limit of 24 hours, like this:

US - Beijing - Kunming - the country of your final destination

All you need are your confirmed flight tickets in hard copy and your statement at check-in counter in US that you will fly to the country of your final destination visa China using 24 hours TWOV.

One more important detail... In case that you have only one stop within mainland China, you are allowed to enjoy 72 or 144 hours visa free transit that allows you to stay and explore some Chinese city or area of your interest.

Your itinerary:

US - Shanghai - Indonesia with a layover of 14 hours is absolutely fine for 24 hours visa free transit. You can fly on one, through ticket or on separate tickets and different airlines too. This is all acceptable. In order to be allowed to exit the airport you will apply for 24 hours free entry permit upon your landing in Shanghai at the relevant counter close to immigration, where you will present your ticket(s) in the same way as you will at the check-in counter in US. Since your layover is a long one, your chances to be allowed to exit the airport are very good, but you should be warned that the entry permit is not a passenger's right, but it depends upon discretion of immigration authorities on that particular day.
