About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Transit without visa in Beijing and Shanghai

Hi there

I have a query, am due to be flying:
London - Beijing - Hanoi ( staying beijing is under 144 hours and i'm UK passport holder) I understand that means i don't need to do anything before I arrive in Beijing ( apart from fill in the form I obtain onboard)

For my return i want to fly
Saigion - Beijing - London so similar situation to the above. When I am in Beijing though, can I then fly to Shanghai without a proper visa or is that not allowed?

Would i be able to do
Saigon - Shanghai - London instead and still not need a proper visa?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Your first itinerary is definitely qualified for 144 hours visa free transit in case that you have mentioned all your stops. You will fill out one form on board the plane (arrival/departure card), but you will also fill out the blue form at 144 TWOV counter of Beijing airport.

On your return flight you are not allowed to travel to Shanghai after you have landed in Beijing first. Such an itinerary would limit your time within China to just 24 hours visa free transit.

To conclude, your option directly via Shanghai is the winning one because also in this case you would be qualified for 144 hours visa free transit. Of course, like in the first itinerary, you have to take care that there are no additional stops.
