Hi. Yes we are flying from the uk to Dubai where we change planes then fly on to Beijing. The cruise ends in Singapore then we fly back to the uk again changing planes in Dubai. How do we get the 144 hour exemption certificate?

In case that you are arriving by flight into Beijing from some other country, different from both mainland China and Japan and if your flight doesn't have any additional stop(s) in the mentioned countries, you are perfectly eligible for 144 hours visa free transit in Beijing and you don't need any kind of visa.

You need full Chinese visa because you will travel through more than one Chinese transit zones in a row and in you case those are Beijing and Xi'an. Tourist (L) visa is a must in your case.

If you are eligible for the 144-hour visa free policy, follow the six steps:

1. Inform the carrier when boarding
2. Fill an Arrival/Departure Card
3. Apply for the 144-hour visa-free stay permit upon arrival
4. Claim the luggage
5. Go through the customs
6. Leave the airport
