About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Chicago - Shanghai-Bangkok

We are traveling from Chicago with a 3 hour layover in ShangHai then leaving to Bangkok.

Our way home we are traveling from Chiang Mai, Thailand to ShangHai with an overnight layover there - a hotel will be booked before leaving the next morning back to Chicago.

What do we need to fill out? I called the airline and they did not help ease my concerns. Do I need to contact the embassy and apply for a visa. My trip plans changed unexpectedly and now we are scrambling to put everything back together again. Please help!

You should not be worried that much because your itinerary is definitely eligible for visa free transit. Your itinerary:

Chicago - Shanghai - Bangkok
Chiang Mai - Shanghai - Chicago.

In case that you don't have any additional landings, especially within mainland China, you are eligible for visa free transit. During your first stay in Shanghai you will be covered by 24 hours visa free transit and for your second stay in Shanghai, you will be covered by 24 or by 144 hours visa free transit. So, could you just provide the details, I mean exact times for your flights arriving and departing from Shanghai to determine which one of visa free schemes you will use.

One more detail... Do you fly on through (single) ticket or on separate ones. Both is fine, but I just want to know this detail because of your first layover in Shanghai because of relatively short time between the flights.

Just be relaxed because everything will be just fine and visa free definitely :)
