About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

visit to Shanghai for 1-2 days for business from Hong Kong

Hi, I am a US citizen and will be a tourist in Hong Kong (my plane tickets are for Boston to Hong Kong to Taipei, then back to Boston via a layover in Hong Kong). While in Hong Kong for 1 week, I plan to fly to Shanghai on July 22 for a business meeting, and then return to Hong Kong either the night of July 22 or the day of July 23. Does this count for "72-hour visa-free transit"? Thank you very much for your help.

No.

Take a flight back to Macau and take the ferry to HK.
That works.

Again, to be eligible for 144 hours visa free transit, you will have to stay at least 25 hours within mainland China. By the way, there are no more 72 hours, but 144 hours in Shanghai.
