Hello, me and my boyfriend will be touring some cities in Asia in the next weeks. We will arrive in Beijing from Hong Kong on July 30, and leave Beijing to Frankfurt (Germany) on Aug 5 (total time in Beijing is less than 144 hours). Can we apply for a transit permit? we are both European with Italian passports, and we have been told by a travel agency that we cannot get the transit permit since our trip begins and ends in Europe. However, we enter Beijing from a non-european city, thus I was surprised that we cannot ask for the transit permit. Our planned flights are Munich (Germany) - Singapore on July 22, than Singapore - Hong Kong on July 26, Hong Kong - Beijing on July 30 and Beijing - Frankfurt on Aug 5.

Of course you are eligible for 144 hours visa free transit in Beijing. Silvia, you have to understand that the agencies are sometimes clueless about this scheme, sometimes they just want to get some commission by forcing you to obtain a visa and sometimes they are both clueless and also greedy. Don't listen to them because even in case that you have departed for China from Rome and returned to Zurich, i.e. Europe - China - Europe, you would be still eligible for 144 hours visa free transit. Anyway, you should take care that your flights to and from Beijing don't have any other landing(s) within mainland China!The process is fairly easy. First, you will declare in Hong Kong that you will fly to Frankfurt via Beijing using 144 hours visa free transit. You will present them your tickets in hard copy. After your arrival in Beijing, you will approach the relevant counter, fill out the blue form, present your tickets and preferably an accommodation booking, will receive a sticker in the passport and that's it.
