I have a 24hour layover in Kunming from San Fransisco through to India. Will I get transit visa?

Its China Eastern All the way.
SFO to PVG

PVG to KMG
23.5 hour layover (need transit visa?)
Also, will China eastern provide accomodation for the layoveR in KMG?

Binny, you definitely need a transit (G) visa since your entire transit time in China noticeably exceeds 24 hours. You should obtain that visa in advance. As far as your question regarding the accommodation is concerned, you are gladly asked to direct that question to the airline. It's hard to know what their policy in your particular case is.

Unfortunately, the detail that you will not come out in Shanghai doesn't matter. The entire time in transit in China is calculated from your first scheduled landing in China, in your case in Shanghai, until your last departure from China, in your case from Kunming. As you can see, this is more than 24 hours and you really, and I'm telling you this from my best intentions, need a transit (G) visa obtained in advance, i.e. while you are still in US. In case that you do not obtain mentioned visa, you will be denied boarding in SFO. This rule is imposed on every citizenship of this world with the exception of the few countries that don't need a visa to enter the China.
