About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

HK Airlines did NOT allow me to travel from Canada - HZ China - Hong Kong then back to Canada

When in Vancouver, HK Airlines said I could NOT take my trip to HZ, China as I was not allowed to go to HK after HZ, China. I had to switch my flight around twice costing me approximately $1,500 so I could make it work and travel to China for 5 days - HK for 2 days then back home. Does this seem right? Why does it say everywhere online HK is okay to go to after China, but HK airlines, after many attempts to explain in Vancouver and HK. I had to travel to Taiwan after HZ, then to HK then home to make it work. Is there something I am missing, or did things change?

Canada - Hangzhou - HK qualifies for 144h twov.
The airline was totally wrong in that case.

Stephanie, you should definitely claim that an airline company reimburse you for every single cent that you have spent over the price of your original ticket. Your entire itinerary was perfectly eligible for 144 hours visa free transit. Please, just do not give up from the efforts to be reimbursed. Start politely and with the facts and if they do not react or deny reimbursement, start with threats of media exposure along with a lawsuit.

What was your routing? Hong Kong Airlines does not service mainland china directly from North America, it connects in Hong Kong. Was it Canada > Hong Kong > Hongzhou > Hong Kong > Canada? If so than you do need a visa. Even if you didn't leave the airport in Hong Kong it still counts as a stop.

Agree with CDKING here. Hongkong Airlines does NOT fly to Mainland China from any place other than HK, and Hainan Airlines (its Mainland Chinese affiliate) does NOT fly to Vancouver, BC from Mainland China (it does fly to Seattle but it is impossible for anyone to confuse the two). Therefore boarding denial is justified given your route is YVR-HKG-HGH-HKG which is not transit under international definition.

CDKING and John Doe, you are definitely right. The only airline that flies between Vancouver and Hangzhou is Beijing Capital Airlines.

You’re right. I did fly to HK first. I should have done more research, thanks! I switched my flights around in Canada so I could at least fly to HK.

Canada - HK return and then HZ -HK return

When I was in HK they said I had to book a trip from HK - HZ - Taipei - HK to make the 144 visa free visit work.

I received an alert my flight from Taipei to HK was cancelled the morning of so I booked a new flight. The airlines said I had to pay for an all new flight from HZ to Taipei also because the 2nd leg of the trip cancelled and I couldn’t take the first flight and repurchase the exact same flight.
