About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

72 hour transit in Beijing for 2-3 nights

I would like to fly into Beijing and stay for 2-3 days with the 72 hour visa before continuing to Vietnam. On my return, I’ll need to spend the night before heading back to the States the next day. How can I go about this?

So I would have a three different tickets: USA to China to USA (2wks apart). Then one-way to Vietnam (3 days after my arrival in Beijing), and then one-way from Thailand to Beijing the day before my flight back to the USA. Will this still be okay?

There is no problem about it. It is important whether your itinerary is eligible. So, if your itinerary looks like this:

US - Beijing - Vietnam

and you don't have any additional landing within mainland China, this itinerary is eligible for 144 hours visa free transit in Beijing (144 hours has replaced 72 hours couple of years ago).

For your journey back, you should also take care that your itinerary looks like:

Vietnam - Beijing - US

Here you will also take care that you don't have any additional landings within mainland China. You will count how many hours are there between your scheduled landing in Beijing and your scheduled departure from Beijing and if the number is shorter than 24, you will travel covered by 24 hours visa free transit. If the number is longer that 24 hours, you will again enjoy 144 hours visa free transit.

This is it and, please, just use correct terminology because this is not 72 or 144 or 24 hour visa, but 144 and/or 24 hours visa free transit, so there is no visa at all!

Dear, your itinerary is USA-Beijing-Vietnam and Thailand-Beijing-USA? If yes, your itinerary is covered on 144h visa exemption transit.
