About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

Is a visa required for a 1 night stay in Shanghai

Hi, my husband and I are travelling with British passports from the Uk on 24th October on a direct flight to Shanghai arriving on 25.10.19 and we will be stopping in a hotel there overnight. The next day (26th October) we join a cruise from Shanghai to Japan and Manila then returning to Hong Kong on 9th November 2019 and on that date we get a direct flight back to the UK. Do we need a full visa for China, apply on line for a 144 hour Visa or can we complete a visa form on our flight o Shanghai?

No, you don't need a visa if your itinerary is in compliance with the following conditions:

- Your flight from UK to Shanghai should not have any additional landing within mainland China and also in the country that will be your first country to visit after you depart from Shanghai.
- Your cruise should not have as the first port call, immediately after Shanghai, a place in Mainland China. If your first port call, immediately after Shanghai is some Japanese or South Korean port, thist is fine.

So, if your itinerary is in the compliance with the above conditions, you are perfectly eligible for 24/144 hours visa free transit in Shanghai. You will easily find out which one of the mentioned transits will apply in your case by calculating the time from your scheduled arrival in Shanghai until your scheduled departure by cruise from Shanghai. If that time is shorter than 24 hours, you will be covered by 24 hours visa free transit and in case that your time is longer, you will enjoy 144 hours visa free transit. Basically nothing changes for you, but just to know for which one of the two options you will apply for.
