About:China Visa on Arrival

144 hr transit visa to Shanghai

I have a UK passporr. I was wondering if the 144-hr visa exemption transit option would be a valid option to stay in Shanghai without needing a visa (for example traveling from Seoul to Shanghai and Shanghai to another third country), and that it would allow me to stay in Shanghai for three days.
Can I do this without a travel agency?

Thanks
But is there a certain way to book the tickets? I mean...should it be a multi city ticket ? Does the seoul to Shanghai have to be the same airline as the one from Shangai to hong kong for example ? Can each leg be booked alone ?

Thanks. That's great.
I had filled in this blue form online a couple of days ago and submitted it online. Do I have to stick to that application and the info in it or can I make a new application upon arrival in Shanghai?

Of course it would. Simply speaking, you as a UK citizen are allowed to stay in Shanghai area for 144 hours (6 days) visa free transit without needing any kind of visa, of course in case that your itinerary is eligible. Your proposed itinerary, Seoul - Shanghai - 3rd country or territory is perfectly fine. You should know that Hong Kong is eligible too. Also, this option is always done without an agency. All you have to do is to have your ticket printed, i.e. in hard copy, your passport and upon arrival you will fill out a blue form that you will hand to the authorities. Of course, advance accommodation booking is always a nice addition. After that, you will receive a sticker in your passport and be allowed to enjoy your visa free time in Shanghai area. Please, you should just take care that your flights to and from Shanghai are not allowed to have any additional landing within mainland China!

This is very easy part. There are no specific rules how the tickets have to be booked. It is enough that you have two confirmed totally separated one way tickets, bought through different carriers... As you can see this is so easy. Anyway, when you declare your intentions upon your check-in in Seoul and in Shanghai upon arrival, then you cannot change anything. You simply have to travel on exactly that ticket you have bought for your onward flight. As I usually repeat, the only things that really matter are the citizenship and an itinerary. So, you can do it if you only want :).

Don't to anything online. You will accomplish everything upon arrival in Shanghai. There is a website for online application, but it is highly unstable, so just forget about it. You have to be consistent in your declaration upon your check-in in Seoul with your declaration in Shanghai, i.e. the tickets that you intend to use have to be declared in both places in the same way. You are not allowed to change them as you wish. Once your declaration is done, then this is considered your final itinerary. There are no fees at all. This entirely free transit. Just remember to have your tickets in hard copy and preferably your accommodation booking too.
