About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

separate tickets for applying 144 hrs visa free transit

Hi. I'm seeing contradictory information around the web, so I wonder if you can help... I am flying
Australia-Taiwan/stay X days/
Taiwan-HANGZHOU/stay 4 days/
HANGZHOU-HongKong/stay X days/
HongKong-Taiwan/stay X days/
Taiwan-Australia. The flights within Asia are on individual tickets on different airlines.

Shanghai immigration site says in English "As long as you have booked your onward air / vessel / train ticket to a third country (region) with confirmed date and seat within 144 hours upon arrival in China," which implies that separate tickets and airlines are fine. Some other websites seem to say that the travel to/from China has to be on one ticket. Do you know whether my scenario is fine??

Your scenario is perfectly fine and you are definitely eligible for 144 hours visa free transit in Shanghai transit zone that encompasses Hangzhou too. Just be informed that separate tickets and different carriers are accepted normally and everything the really matters is your itinerary and your citizenship. You are fine in both. Please, just don't listen to those who grossly misunderstand the rules of visa free transit within mainland China.
