In principle, you are eligible for 24 or 144 hours visa free transit during your stops in Shanghai. You can easily determine whether you will be covered by 24 or 144 hours visa free transit by calculating the time between your scheduled arrival in Shanghai and your scheduled departure from the city. Knowing whether your stay is shorter or longer than 24 hours, you will be able to apply for correct scheme. Anyway, there are several conditions to be fulfilled, although I assume that your itinerary has met all of them. They are:
- Your flights to and from Shanghai should not have any additional landing(s) within mainland China and Japan
- Your first port call, immediately after your departure from Shanghai, should not be in mainland China
- Your last port call, immediately before your arrival in Shanghai, should not be in mainland China
As you can see, if all the above mentioned conditions are met, you will travel visa free. Please, just try to use correct terminology because it is not 24 or 144 free visa, but 24 or 144 hours visa free transit, so no visa at all. I'm telling you this, so that you can avoid any possible misunderstandings.
