About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Transit Visa for Canadians

We are family of 3 with Canadian Citizenship and there is a layover in Shanghai for 15 hours in Sept this year. Do we need a visa to get out of the airport and take the city tour?

If Shanghai is your only stop within mainland China and you are in transit between two different countries, you are qualified for 24 hours visa free transit in Shanghai. To be allowed to exit the airport, you will have to apply for 24 hours free entry permit upon your landing in Shanghai. Having in mind that your layover is very long, i.e. 16 hours, your chances to be allowed to exit the airport are very good. Also, in case that you enclose accommodation booking or some kind of half day tour, you will almost certainly be granted mentioned entry permit. Anyway, the only way to be 100% certain is obtaining of transit visa (G) or even tourist (L) visa in advance because Canadians can obtain multiple entry, long term visa.
