About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

United states citizens arriving at Beijing PEK airport

We are departing USA, doing a layover in Canada to then arrive at Beijing, from Beijing we are going to Seoul. Wanted to know if we can still get the 72 hr visa if so please clarify what should we tell the officer if the 72 hr visa is approved? Also which sections of the great wall could we visit, can we drive using US driver's license and how far is the police station to register? We are possibly staying at an Airbnb

You obviously qualify for 144 hours transit without visa (which is not a "72 hr visa", it will avoid confusion if you use the correct terminology). You need to present your confirmed onward ticket at check-in and on arrival. You cannot drive in China on a foreign or international driving license. Your airbnb host will have to accompany you to the nearest police station with all the relevant paperwork. That can be troublesome and it's much easier to stay in a hotel, who will automatically register you.
