About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am traveling from San Francisco to Shanghai and Beijing for a 3-day business trip.

Can I use the 72-hour Visa free process for this? If yes, would I need a round trip ticket back to SFO to do so? What if I need to travel back the the US via the the Middle East/Kuwait?

Travel between Shanghai and Beijing is not allowed on a transit without visa. You need to travel directly to a third county before going to another Chinese city.
For example Country A > Shanghai > Hong Kong then Hong Kong > Beijing > County B
