Entry/exit China during work and residence permit application

I have applied for an employment license in China and once this is (hopefully) approved, I will apply for a Z visa at the China embassy in my home country (Spain). I will then enter China and apply for temporary residence and work permits. My question is, am I allowed to travel outside China during the temporary residence and work permit application period? Does the Z visa allow multiple entires? Even if that's the case, is it so that my passport will be held by the authoritites during the application process and I therefore can't travel until the process is completed? Thanks

Dear, you should get work permit first and then apply for work Z type. There is multiple entries Z type. During the residence permit application period, your passport will be held by local PSB, so you may not travel outside China.
