Hong Kong - Shanghai - Tokyo

Hi, I will be flying from Hong Kong to Shanghai on July 15th and spending 3 days there before flying nonstop on to Tokyo on July 18th. From what I have researched I do not need a visa for this and can just apply for a transit without visa at the airport when I land in Shanghai by showing my passport and airline ticket to Tokyo on the 18th. Is this correct?
