I have a 20 hr layover in PEK airport. I am planning to checkout few places in Beijing. Do I need to apply for a visa.

If you only stay in Beijing less than 24 hours, then you are eligible for 24-hour free visa transit. No visa is needed but you need to apply for a stay permit at the airport.
