Visa for one day trip in Shanghai

I have booked a cruise sailing from Japan and ending up in Hong Kong with a one day stop in Shanghai. Do I need a visa for Shanghai just for a one day shore excursion with a group from the ship?

Hi, if you only stop one city of mainland China, Shanghai, then you are eligible for the 144-hour free visa transit and no visa is needed.
