About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I use the 24 hour free visa for day excursion in Shanghai while on a cruise?

Am getting conflicting information from cruise line, travel agent, and websites about whether we need to have a visa or not; will be on a cruise from Japan (Yokahama) stopping in China (Shanghai) for a one-day excursion, then onto Taiwan before disembarking in Hong Kong, then 4 night stay and fly back to Australia.

Japan > Shanghai > Taiwan > Hong Kong allows for 24 hour transit without visa in Shanghai. If more than 24 hours and its tour group arranged by approved Chinese travel agency then you can stay up to 15 days in China when the same boat that brought you brings you out.
