About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Minimum stopover time for leaving airport

Hi, I'm looking at a flight with a 6hr 50min stopover in Guangzhou. Is that enough time for me to use the transit visa and step out for some food?

This is possible just theoretically. Usually, it is required at least 8 hours to be eligible for 24 hours free entry permit. Please, just use correct terminology to avoid any misunderstandings because you will not apply for any kind of visa, but for entry permit that could allow you to exit the airport when flying on 24 hours visa free transit through China. As I have mentioned, you are allowed to apply for entry permit, but you should also know that you will be likely denied one. By the way, even in cases where a layover is more than 8 hours, the issuing of entry permit is always upon immigration discretion. Of course, you can always try because there are no consequences for unsuccessful attempts.
