About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

round trip ticket to China, but upon arriving can I fly to HK to get my visa.

Hello,
I have purchased a round trip ticket from Paris to Nanjing with a layover in Chengdu, but since I am an American citizen, I seem to be running into difficulties getting a visa to cover my 51 day trip from the Paris visa center. Can I use the 24 hour visa free transit where after arriving in Nanjing I would continue on to Hong Kong where I could then apply for a proper visa? I am assuming that I would have to go through immigration proceeding during the Chengdu layover. If this is possible, how would it work?

Thanks! Since it seems flights to Hong Kong stop early afternoon, could I fly to Shenzhen and cross by the high speed train to hk? If not are there any options?

There is an alternative although everything depends on the time of your arrival in Nanjing. If your arrival is in eraly afternoon hours, then you have a possibility to take a train from Nanjing to Shanghai (Hongqiao station) from where you can easily transfer by metro to nearby Hongqiao airport to take a nonstop flight departing for Hong Kong at 19:15. (7:15 PM).

Please, could you just supply us with your scheduled arrivals/departures to Chengdu and Nanjing.

Tom, you can use 24 hours visa free transit to reach Hong Kong only in case that the time from your scheduled arrival in Chengdu until your scheduled departure from Nanjing to Hong Kong is less than 24 hours. Please, keep in mind that certain flight options between some mainland Chinese cities, Nanjing included, and Hong Kong could have another landing within mainland China, so in that case you have to count the time from your scheduled arrival in Chengdu until your scheduled departure from the last airport within mainland China. This is doable, but it also requires good planning and you should have in mind that you will need all the necessary tickets until Hong Kong before your check-in in Paris as an evidence that you are eligible for 24 hours visa free transit in China. By the way, yes you will have to go through immigration in Chengdu because the flight from Paris to China, provided by Air China terminates in Chengdu and from Chengdu to Nanjing you will proceed by a domestic flight.

You cannot take the train to Hong Kong from Shenzhen. High speed train requires a visa, and moreover, transit from Shenzhen to Hong Kong is not allowed under 24 hours transit without visa.
