Hello can i use the 72 hour visa to stay in Shanghai on a business trip before flying on to India?

If your citizenship is Australian you are eligible for 144 hours visa free transit in Shanghai (72 was replaced by this longer option), but you should take care that you are allowed to stay in Shanghai area with two neighboring provinces as one transit zone and your flights to and from Shanghai should not have any additional landings within mainland China. Please, just use correct terminology because you will fly visa free and not on any kind of visa.
