About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Travelling by train from hong kong to Shanghai then 4 nights in Shanghai then cruise to Australia

We are Australian citizens and wonder if these arrangements will allow us to use the 144 hour visa free transit scheme. Can we organize this scheme in Hong Kong at the West Kowloon Railway Station or would it have to be somewhere else. Thank you

Derek, you cannot use West Kowloon railway station and you have to organize everything before your arrival in Shanghai.

To conclude:

- You can use the train, but a conventional, direct one departing from Hung Hom station in Hong Kong because only that train is eligible for 144 hours visa free transit in Shanghai.

This train is also fine, you can take a soft sleeper or superior soft sleeper class on this train because the traveling time takes 19 hours and 22 minutes. Also, you should have in mind that this train departs every other day.

You cannot. You need a visa in advance from your local embassy/consulate. High speed rail is not eligible for visa-free transit.
