144-Hour Visa-Free Transit in China for British Citizens

Hi, My wife, I and two children are all British Citizen. We plan to Fly from London to Beijing on the 5th of September and arrive in Beijing on the 6th of September. We plan to stay in Beijing for less than 72 hours, then take a train Journey to Shenyang and stay in Shenyang for less than 72 hours. We then plan to fly to Japan on the of September. So come from Country A (UK) and stay in B (china, but in both Beijing and Shenyang) for less than 144 hours, then fly to Country C (Japan). I know if we just stay in Beijing we are eligible for the "144-Hour Visa-Free Transit in China" . Now we plan to stay in Beijing and Shenyang for less than 144 hours in total, do we need a Chinese Visa ? Thank you very much for your help.
