Not sure when or where to apply and if eligible for the 144 free transit visa?

Do we need to apply for 2 seperate visas if so when and where do we apply?
We have been told we are eligible but not sure how or where to apply.
Both of us are Australian passport holders, flying from Australia to Beijing staying 1 night in hotel next day sailing out of Beijing at (Tianjin Shipping Cruise Port) on a cruise ship around Japan for 7 nights then re entering at the Cruise Shipping Port back to Beijing. My question is (is it allowable to then apply for second visa in such a close time to the first one) back into Beijing staying 1 night in hotel next day flying out of Beijing to Australia. We have documents for flight, hotel, cruise ship, and return flight.
We just need clarification on when and where to apply and make sure that we are eligible.
Many thanks for your help and advice very much appreciated. 😀

You are eligible and, please, just use exact terminology because you will apply for 144 hours visa free transit and not for "transit visa". This is quite a difference, so just use visa free terminology to avoid any possible misunderstandings.

You will apply for 144 hours visa free transit for the first time at Beijing airport upon your arrival from Australia. You will approach the relevant counter, fill out the form and show your documentation to the authorities. After that, your passports will be stamped and you allowed to leave the airport.

After that you will depart from Tianjin out of Beijing area for a cruise and apply for 144 hours visa free transit for the second time at the end of your cruise, upon your arrival at cruise terminal in Tianjin. The procedure will be the same as in Beijing airport. Just one overnight and you will depart for Australia. Just have your documentation with you and be perfectly relaxed and again, use exact terminology :)).

Actually, you will travel travel through China visa free, so there are no visas for you. It is important that you use exact terminology, so 144 hours visa free.

It is good that you have prepared all the necessary documents and they have to be in hard copy.

Your first application for 144 hours visa free transit will be upon your landing at Beijing airport. You will apply at the relevant counter where you will fill out blue form beside the yellow form that you will fill out in the plane. After that you will hand out all the necessary documents and will get a stamp in your passport. Then you will leave the airport, explore the city and board your cruise.

Your second application will be at Tianjin Shipping Cruise Port upon your arrival from Japan. The application procedure is the same as it was at Beijing airport.

You really do not have to announce your intentions that you will travel visa free until your check-in in Australia. There you will just say that you are traveling visa free because you are eligible due to your itinerary Australia - Beijing (China) - Japan. The same thing you will say to Japanese border authorities in your last Japanese port (before your return to China) that you will travel visa free because you are eligible due to your itinerary Japan - Tianjin (China) - Australia.

As you can see, the procedure is really straightforward, although sometimes it appears, at first, as a bit complicated. Just relax and enjoy your travels.
