Ellen, to use the 144-hour visa-free transit in Shenzhen, you have to fly in rather than take a boat. However, you may apply for the Shenzhen five-day VOA if you just want to visit Shenzhen.

In order to use 144 hours visa free transit you have to fly from Hong Kong to Guangzhou, stay in Guangdong province and return to Macau, preferably by ferry from Shenzhen. From Macau you can easily return to Hong Kong. This simple becuse you have to fly in Guangdong province and after that return to different entity from the one from where you have arrived in Guangdong province. Like this you will have Hong Kong - China (Guangdong province) - Macau. Visa free 144 hours is granted.
