About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Does this qualify for 144hr visa free transit?

I’m flying round trip from the US - Japan. And then have a round trip flight from Japan - Shanghai within the trip. I had bought tickets to Japan before deciding to visit Shanghai.

Unfortunately, the itinerary Japan - Shanghai - Japan is not eligible for 144 hours visa free transit because you are arriving in Shanghai directly from Japan and returning directly in the same country (Japan) after your visit to Shanghai. You will have to obtain a visa or change the flights. For example you can use an itinerary like this one and become eligible: Japan - South Korea - Shanghai - Japan.
