About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

New York to India through Beijing

Hello,
I hold an Indian Passport. I have roundtrip tickets from NY to India through Beijing and both trips have a layover of about 16 hours.
DO I need to apply for a visa beforehand or the 24 hr visa free-entry would work in both my trips? Do I need anything apart from the Hotel reservation?

Is there an official source for this information?

PS - Thanks for all the information in your article. (More helpful than the Chinese consulate of NY )

Edit :
I'd like to leave the airport and do some sightseeing during this layover

Thanks !

Understood.
Thanks for your response.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) both my layover start at about 5-6 am and my flight is at about 8-9pm so basically all day layover. My idea was to have hotel bookings reserved and just cancel them so as to not spend anything on accomodation.
Hopefully that wouldnt create a problem :|

Anyway, Thank you

You are perfectly covered by 24 hours visa free transit, but keep in mind that this convenience does not automatically grant you 24 hours free entry permit! These are two different things although related. In order to obtain entry permit, you will have to make a hotel reservation and have it in hard copy along with your flight tickets. Upon arrival in Beijing you will apply for your 24 hours free entry permit and presented the above mentioned documentation. Your chances to be allowed to exit the airport are very good, especially with hotel booking and in case that your layover is during the night hours. Anyway, issuing of entry permit is always upon discretion of immigration official.

Official source of information is Timatic. Luckily enough, this source is at hand to relevant airport staff. Usually, diplomatic missions are quite poor source of information of this kind.
