do I need a visa for transit in Urumqi

I am a New Zealand citizen. I have a ticket booked from New Zealand to Bishkek, in Kyrgyzstan with a transit through Urumqi airport for 8 hours overnight. I understand the airport closes. Do I need a visa to leave the airport and stay in a hotel during that time, or can I stay in the airport?

Rosy, no matter whether you will leave the airport, you need to apply for a transit visa because your layover in Urumqi is more than two hours. With the transit G visa, you can leave the airport.
