About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hong Kong to Shanghai to Hong Kong

Would this journey be eligible for a 72 hour visa-free transit? I have a Canadian passport and will be in Shanghai for less than 72 hours.

Of course it is not eligible. You are not in transit to a third country.

You can make an alternative to your flight itinerary. For example, you can fly from Hong Kong to Shanghai and return from Shanghai to Macau. Macau is close to Hong Kong. Using this option, you would be perfectly eligible for 144 hours visa free transit in Shanghai.
