About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can the 144 hours be split ?

If we fly in to Shanghai on Sep 28 for a cruise to Japan on Oct 1, can we stay 2 more days in Shanghai when our cruise returns?

Yes you can, but keep in mind that you should not have any mainland Chinese port calls immediately before your arrival in Shanghai. Also, you should keep in mind that your flight from Shanghai cannot have a layover in Japan and you should also not have a layover in Japan before your first arrival in Shanghai. To conclude, your itinerary could look like this one to be eligible for 144 hours visa free transit twice in Shanghai:

US - Shanghai - Japanese ports
Japanese ports - Shanghai - US
