Seattle to Shanghai (17 hour layover) to Male. do I need a visa?

I don't believe I need a visa in that scenario. We want to go outside of the airport for the day while in SH prior to continuing on the Male. Do we need a visa?

No, you are eligible for the 24-hour free visa transit. Just apply for a stay permit in the airport.
